Counseling for Individuals, Couples, Family, and Groups
Being in a helping profession has always been a dream of mine, and after seeing the impact of mental health struggles with loved ones and strangers alike. My decision to become a counselor became even more clear at the height of the Covid pandemic. I was already studying psychology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham when I decided to pursue my passion of supporting others in their most challenging times. Upon completion of my undergraduate degree, I continued my studies at Wake Forest University and graduated with a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I am currently an associate licensed therapist under the supervision of Joyce McKay #01188.
Throughout my years of undergraduate and graduate school, I gained experience working with eating disorders, substance use disorders, and general mental health disorders. I first learned of my passion for working with addictions at a residential eating disorder treatment center and furthered my experience by working at a partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient treatment center for substance use disorders for my internship. I draw on therapeutic approaches that place the client at the center and focus on seeing my client from a holistic perspective. After working alongside various populations, I adopted an approach that is a combination of psychodrama, Cognitive-Behavioral, and Dialectical Behavior therapies.
I believe in the power of a strong therapeutic relationship and work to show up for my clients while providing a safe, non-judgmental environment. I want to ensure that my clients feel heard, seen, and supported while also challenging them to gain skills and perspective throughout their therapeutic journey. Also, my clients and I work together to create an individualized plan that supports the client’s goals while drawing on their strengths. While I value working with a variety of individuals, I specifically enjoy utilizing my unique personal experience and knowledge of first responders, military, and veterans. I strive to provide a space for individuals, and their families, to receive care that is so often neglected in these careers.
